 Activities at a Glance

Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, T. Nagar, Chennai is a branch of the Ramakrishna Mission started by Swami Vivekananda in 1897.This centre began its activity with the starting of a School in the year 1932 and since then has been growing according to the needs of the community and the socio-economic changes that are taking place around us.  This centre through its educational service to the society has produced many students who have walked out of the portals of the School and have become great leaders of the country. 

To name a few : Dr. S.Badrinath, Chairman (Emeritus) of Sankara Netralaya,            Sri Ramanathan Krishnan, the Tennis legend, the Chief of Indian Army Gen. Sundarjee, Air Vice Marshal V.Krishnaswamy, Sri Y.V. Reddy, former Governor of RBI, and Dr. Nalli Kuppuswami Chetty, etc.

Shrine and Prayer Hall

Our Ashrama has shrine where daily worship and vesper services are performed. The spacious prayer hall provides serene and calm atmosphere for meditation and prayer. A number of devotees visit the shrine daily and take part in prayer etc., besides the boys staying in the Hostel. Ramnam Sankirtan is conducted on Ekadasi days. 

Weekly classes and lectures

Weekly classes and lectures on spiritual topics are conducted by the monks of the Order.

Vidyarthi Homa

Vidyarthi Homa is performed every year welcoming the new boys. The boys take 5 vows of student career based on the values of life. 

Celebrations of Birthdays

The Birthdays of Bhagavan Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi, Swami Vivekananda and other spiritual personnel are celebrated every year.Ashrama maintains a Shrine where daily worship and vesper services are performed. 

Welfare Activities Buttermilk Distribution

During the month of May every year, buttermilk is distributed to the wayfarers. On an average, 2000 people are served every day. 

Annadana

About 200 Children of our Nursery and Primary  School, which caters to the underprivileged classes, are served with noon food on all the working days.

Library

The library attached to the Ashrama is opened for the use of the public on all the days of the week. The library has got about 15000 books. A number of magazines and Newspapers are kept for the general public.

Show Room


A Show room attached to the Ashrama sells books of Ramakrishna-Vivekananda and Vedanta Literature.  The show room is kept closed on the morning session on all the Mondays 

Ramakrishna Mission Boys' Hostel

This Hostel provides congenial atmosphere for the children's all-round development viz. physical, intellectual, moral and spiritual. In addition to the care given towards academic excellence greater stress is given to character development which forms an essential part of what Swami Vivekananda terms as "Man-making Education".

The Science Centre


In commemoration of 150th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda and in line with his teachings, Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, T.Nagar set up a Science Centre in November 2012 in knowledge partnership with Agastya International Foundation.


This Science Centre was formally inaugurated on 9th February 2013 by Dr. Mylswami Annadurai, Project Director (Chandrayan), ISRO Satellite Centre, Bangalore in the holy presence of Srimat Swami Srikarananadaji Maharaj, Assistant General Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math as a Chief Guest of the Function.


“Try to set up a fund, buy some magic lanterns, maps, globe etc. and some chemicals. Get every evening a crowd of poor and low, lecture them about religion first, and then teach them through the magic lantern and other things, astronomy, geography etc. in the dialect of the people.”  – Swami Vivekananda

Spoken English Course

It has now become clear that English is the lingua franca of the global economy and that, in order to be universally understood and accepted in any educational, commercial or social situation, a knowledge of English is necessary. The cultures of other countries find a meeting point in English. It is, therefore, necessary to have a knowledge of both Spoken as well as Written English in order to make a contribution to every aspect of life. It is to meet these needs, we conduct the Spoken English Courses. 

Ramakrishna Mission Higher Secondary School (Main)

The Ramakrishna Mission Higher Secondary School (Main) is a unit of Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, T.Nagar, Chennai 600017. The School gives character-building and man-making Education as envisioned by Swami Vivekananda. This school has produced many students who have walked out of the portals of the School and have become great leaders of the country. Started on 13 June 1932, the School has classes from 6th Standard to XII standard in English Medium and Tamil Medium (selected classes only). In the Higher Secondary sections, it offers Arts and Science courses. Computer is also taught with the help of a well-equipped Computer Lab. A number of Merit Scholarships and prizes are given to the students.

 

There were 950 students on roll in the Academic year (2019-20). The library attached to the school has good number of valuable books. Every year, our students participate in various cultural, educational, sports etc. competitions and bring laurel to the school.

Ramakrishna Mission Higher Secondary School (South)


Started in 1936, the School has classes now from 6th Standard to XII standard in English Medium having Tamil as the 2nd Language. In the Higher Secondary sections, it offers Arts and Science courses. Computer Science is also taught with a well-equipped Lab. A number of Merit Scholarships and prizes are given to the students.  The library is attached to the school.


The endeavor of the school which has strength of about 500 students from VI to Class XII is to provide an all-round education based on the human values contained in our great heritage of our country to the students. Further it strives to inculcate good character and patriotism to enable them to be enlightened citizens of our great nation.

Ramakrishna Mission Matriculation Higher Secondary School

The School had its beginning with the starting of Ramakrishna Mission English Medium School in 1977 at No.6 Maharajapuram Santhanam Salai (Griffith Road),  T. Nagar for students from LKG to V Standard under the aegis of the Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama.  In order to cater to the demands of the parents of this locality and to provide continuity of education to the pupils of the English Medium School, Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama had upgraded it into a Matriculation School from the academic year 1998-1999, and to Higher Secondary School in the academic year 2006-2007.

Ramakrishna Mission Nursery and Primary School


Started on 14th June 1989, the School conducts classes from LKG. to V std. No fees are charged to the students of this school. The strength of the School is about 240. The School has been recognized by the Government of Tamilnadu. This Primary School is non-aided. This School caters to the underprivileged section of the society.  All the students of the school are provided with noon-meal

Vidyadana

A number of Educational Scholarships are given to the students our Schools. The poor and needy children are given Educational Help for continuing their studies in our Schools.

Uniform

A number of Educational Scholarships are given to the students of our Schools.

Hostel Facilities

Free Hostel Facilities and concession in Hostel and School Fees are provided for 10 students every year with an annual expenditure of about Rs. 2 lakh.
